“I held a cordial, friendly and fruitful meeting with President Lula. We took a look back at China’s relationship with Brazil over the last 50 years. We agreed that this relationship is at its best in history. It has a strategic and long-term global projection. term increasingly highlighted. And it set an example to move forward together with solidarity and cooperation, among large developing countries”, said the president in a statement to the press. China is the country with the second largest economy on the planet and Brazil’s main partner since 2009, responsible for more than half of the country’s annual trade surplus.

The agenda in Brasília follows the participation of the Chinese leader in G20 Summitheld in Rio de Janeiro and which ended last Tuesday (19). Furthermore, it is in return for Lula’s visit to China in April 2023 and takes place in celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, completed this year.

In his statement after the meeting with Xi Jinping, President Lula announced the elevation of the status of the bilateral relationship, which is now classified as a “Global Strategic Partnership to the level of a Community with a Shared Future for a Fairer World and a Sustainable Planet” .

“We are determined to base our cooperation over the next 50 years in areas such as sustainable infrastructure, energy transition, artificial intelligence, digital economy, health and aerospace. For this reason, we will establish synergies between Brazilian development strategies, such as Nova Indústria Brasil (NIB ), the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), the South American Integration Routes Program, and the Ecological Transformation Plan and the Belt and Road Initiative To make synergies concrete, a Task Force. on Financial Cooperation and another on Productive and Sustainable Development will be established and priority projects must be presented within two months”, stated Lula.

Global South

Xi Jinping also highlighted as an example the fact that Brazil and China are the two largest developing countries in two regions and occupy a leading role in the aspirations of countries in the so-called Global South – a geopolitical term that designates poor nations or those in similar socioeconomic situations, especially from Latin America, Africa and Asia.

“China and Brazil must proactively assume the great historic responsibility of safeguarding the common interests of countries in the Global South and promoting a more just and equitable international order,” said the Chinese president. He further advocated increasing the representation of developing countries in global governance. “It is also our consensus that China and Brazil continue to strengthen collaboration in multilateral forums such as the United Nations, G20 and Brics, confronting hunger and poverty,” he added.

“We defend the reform of global governance and a more democratic, fair, equitable and environmentally sustainable international system. In a world plagued by armed conflicts and geopolitical tensions, China and Brazil put peace, diplomacy and dialogue first. I thanked the engagement in the Call to Action for Global Governance Reform that Brazil launched within the scope of the G20”, said Lula in the statement, in line with his counterpart.

International conflicts

Both Lula and Xi Jinping addressed the situation of wars that have been occurring around the world and defended political solutions to end the conflicts.

“We will never overcome the scourge of hunger amidst the senselessness of wars. The Global Alliance against Hunger, officially launched two days ago, is one of the most important initiatives of the Brazilian presidency of the G20. China was an early partner in this endeavor to return dignity to the 733 million people who suffer from hunger in the world, in the 21st century. Without peace, the planet will not be in a position to build solutions to the climate crisis”, said Lula. The Brazilian president mentioned the document released with China and which proposes a political resolution to the war in Ukraine.

For the president of China, the world is far from peaceful, “with several regions suffering from wars, conflicts, turbulence and insecurity.”

“Humanity is an indivisible security community. Only when we embrace the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security will we create a universal security path. Regarding the crisis in Ukraine, I have emphasized several times that there is no simple solution to a complex issue. China and Brazil issued common understandings on a political resolution to the crisis in Ukraine and created a group of friends of peace, on the crisis in Ukraine. We must bring together more voices that advocate peace and seek to facilitate a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine. Ukraine”, he said.

Regarding the war in the Gaza Strip, invaded by Israel, the Chinese president stated that the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate and demanded greater commitment from the international community in an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian assistance, as well as a lasting solution that, according to he needs to ensure the existence of two States.

Lula and Xi Jinping are expected to meet again next year, when Brazil will host a new BRICS summit in July. The Chinese’s presence is also expected at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held at the end of next year in Belém.
